Multilingual Learner Equity Program Overview

The work of Multilingual Learner Equity is guided by the California English learner Roadmap and the English Language Development Standards. See links below for more information.
California English Learner Roadmap English Language Development Standards
Elementary English Learner (EL) Services 

  • Students in grades TK-5 receive both integrated English support, within their classroom, and designated English support, with separate time allocated to support their English language acquisition. 
  • The Bijou Community School Two-Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI) supports English Learners by building on their first language fluency. 

South Tahoe Middle School English Learner (EL) Services

  • South Tahoe Middle School students receive support in either the Newcomers support class or in the STEEL (Structured English Enrichment LAB) class which is targeted to student ability level. 
  • Two-Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI) English Learners continue their language acquisition with Spanish Language Arts and Native Spanish 1.  TWBI students also study core curriculum social studies coursework in Spanish in grades 6-8. 

South Tahoe High School English Learner (EL) Services

  • South Tahoe High School students receive support in English Language Development (ELD) classes based on their assessed levels. 
  • Two-Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI) English Learners continue their language acquisition with Native Spanish 2 and 3, Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture, Advanced Placement Spanish Literature, Honors Spanish Cinema, and Bilingual Tutoring.  TWBI students also study core curriculum social studies coursework in Spanish in grades 9 and 10.
