STMS has several academic programs available to students.
Some of these programs are intended to remediate and tutor students
who may need extra help, while others are provide additional challenges
for our advanced students. Below is a brief description of each
program.
GATE: Gifted and Talented Education is alive
and well at STMS with GATE Language Arts and Math classes at all
grade levels. These rigorous classes provide enhanced learning for
students who qualify. Qualification is primarily by STAR test results,
although additional measures are often used as well.
John Hopkins Academic Talent Search: Each year
we have several students who test and qualify for this exciting
program through Stanford University. We have had students spend
up to three weeks at Stanford or California State University, Sacramento
studying topics such as biology, literature, writing, and mathematics.
During School Tutorial: For students who show a weakness
in one of the academic areas, in-school tutoring is available by
instructional aides. The focus is to support students in their classes
and remediate areas of weakness. Students receive up to 3 hours
of tutoring each week.
Math Assist Class: The Math Assist classes are geared at
helping struggling students with their math class. Due to the rigorous
nature of our math program (we teacher algebra to all 7th and 8th
grade students), some students need additional time to complete
work or additional instruction to understand a topic. The Math Assist
class counts as one of the students two electives.
SRA Reading: The SRA Reading program is a research based
program that uses structured lessons to teach reading. We have many
different levels of SRA Reading and each student is assessed twice
each year. All 6th grade students receive SRA Reading at their instructional
level, while 7th and 8th students scoring below the 40th percentile
in Total Reading on the SAT 9 also receive this class. This class
takes the place of one of the student's elective choices.
