SRA Reading Program
Program Directors:
Cindy Cowen (x252)
The Corrective Reading Program at STMS enables many
students to dramatically increase their reading skills. Because
of this program, many students have improved not only reading skills,
but also their ability to perform in other curricular areas. Standardized
test scores have also increased since the introduction of SRA Reading
four three years ago.
Students are grouped at their "reading comfort
area" based on a preliminary placement test. In classes ranging
from very beginning recognition of sounds and letters (mostly for
our English Learners) to rigorous reasoning and writing classes
for high readers, students are challenged at their current level
of proficiency. Early lessons concentrate on decoding, reading aloud,
fluency and coomprehension, while the at the higher levels of reasoning
and writing, students focus on grammar, writing skills, and clear
thinking.
