Curriculum Leader:
At STMS the curriculum is very comprehensive,
containing the study of history from prehistoric times to the early
20th century.
Beginning in sixth grade, students
are instructed in the evoluation of man from prehistoric times to
the fall of the Roman Empire. Special emphasis is placed upon the
Stone Age cultures, the beginning of agriculture, Ancient Rome,
Greece, Mesopotamia, India, and Egypt with China and Africa receiving
their share of focus as well.
The seventh grade curriculum sontinues
the study of Rome to its collapse, the growth of Islam, Sub-Saharan
Africa, and the Asian civilizations that developed in China and
Japan. There is also a special emphasis on Europe during the Middle
Ages with the Renaissance and Refromation receiving in-depth study.
The Age of Exploration is also a part of the study as is the Enlightenment.
Eighth grade begins with a review of
the Age of Exploration and Colonial America. The American Revolution,
U.S. Contitution and Early National periods follow. The Age of Jackson
and Westward Expansion are then studied followed by an in-depth
look at how the nation split apart and endured a bloody Civil War.
Reconstruction and the ensuting beginning of the Industrial Age
round out the year.
The California History Standards are
the guiding force for our curriculum and are adhered to by the staff
as we pursue excellence in history.
