South Tahoe Middle School Physical Education
Handbook
Dear Parents and Students:
Welcome to South Tahoe Middle Schools' Physical Education
Program. Our primary goal, as physical educators, is to teach every
child - from the physically gifted to the physically challenged
- how and why they should keep themselves healthy and fit throughout
their lifetime. In our physical education program, we provide learning
experiences which are developmentally appropriate, and that increase
physical competence, physical fitness, self-esteem and joy through
lifelong physical activity.
Here's how we achieve that goal:
- 1. Our physical education curriculum includes a balance of skills,
concepts, game activities, physical fitness, and dance experiences
designed to enhance the cognitive, motor, and affective development
of every child.
- 2. We provide experiences that encourage children to question,
integrate, analyze, communicate, apply cognitive concepts, and
gain a wide, multi-cultural view of the world.
- 3. Throughout the year we teach activities that allow children
the opportunity to work together to improve their emerging social
skills. These activities also help children develop a positive
self-concept.
- 4. Ongoing fitness assessment is used as part of the process
of helping children understand, enjoy, improve, and/or maintain
their physical health and well-being.
- 5. Grade decisions are based primarily on ongoing individual
assessments of students as they participate in physical education
class activities. Students are evaluated subjectively and objectively.
Students are graded on participation, attitude, behavior, written
work/tests, physical fitness testing, skill testing, improvement,
dressing out, and knowledge of skill/activity that is being taught.
Students will be held accountable for non-participation, tardies,
poor behavior, gym clothes violations, and breaking class rules.
A student's personal BEST is considered.
- 6. Finally, our classes are designed so that ALL children are
involved in activities that allow them to experience the joy of
movement. There is always an open invitation to come and visit
our physical education classes. By working together to encourage
health and fitness through physical activity, we are certain we
will be able to help your child develop the positive habit of
lifelong physical activity that will lead to a healthy and productive
life.
Sincerely, South Tahoe Physical Education Department

1. The required uniform for STMS physical education is as follows:

Athletic shoes: Appropriate for physical activities inside or outside.
Shoes MUST be laced traditionally and of the proper size. Sweat

with clothing purchase is available with a parent note or phone
call. HATS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED, EXCEPT DURING SOFTBALL OR NORDIC
SKIING.
2. All physical education clothing must have the student's name
printed on both the shorts and the shirt. We prefer the shirts and
shorts to say the student's full first name and full last name,
or the full first name and the initial of the other name. For example,
Janae Nead or Janae N.
3. Physical Education students are required to dress everyday in
appropriate fitted P.E. clothes. Shorts must cover buttocks at all
times. If your child lends clothing to other students or borrows
from other students a detention will be issued.
4. P.E. clothing is to be worn for P.E. class only, not around
school or at lunch.
5. Loaner clothing (shirt/short/shoes) are available on a short-term
basis. Students may only use "loaner" clothing one time per trimester.
NON-DRESS POLICY
Students are expected to be in their gym clothes and ready for
class 5 minutes after the tardy bell. Students will have 5 minutes
to dress, and take care of bathroom needs, at both ends of the block.
Any attempt to wear "loaners" a second time or failure to dress
for P.E. will result in a detention.
LOCKER ROOM POLICY
1. Most physical education students will be assigned one personal
and one common locker. Some may receive a smaller locker. The personal
locker is for overnight storage of clothing and essentials. The
common locker is for use during the student's P.E. period only.
Students are to use the locker assigned to them and are responsible
for remembering their locker number and combination. ABSOLUTELY
NO SHARING LOCKERS! STUDENTS' ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF THEIR UNLOCKED
BELONGINGS!
2. When not changing clothing, students are responsible for the
security of their locker. Students need to keep their locker closed
and locked, with possessions inside. Students should avoid bringing
valuables or excessive amounts of money. For best security of possessions,
students should keep combinations to themselves. STMS is not responsible
for lost or stolen items due to negligence.
3. Students are to be in the locker room during their P.E. block
only. They must take all books and binders with them when they leave
the locker room.
4. Each student is given a lock. If they lose it or leave it unlocked
and it gets lost, they must pay $5.00 in order to get another one
issued to them. If the lock turns up at the end of the year, we
will reimburse them.
STUDENTS INJURED OR RECOVERING FROM ILLNESS
All parent notes that excuse students form participation will be
considered limited participation excuses. This Limited Participation
Excuse will excuse the student from any activity that will affect
their injury or illness. The student will be put on a modified program
that will allow them to continue with the class, when possible.
A PARENT NOTE MAY LIMIT A STUDENTS' ACTIVITY FOR A MAXIMUM
OF THREE, CONSECUTIVE DAYS. After four or more days, a doctor's
note is required. Only a doctor's note can excuse a student totally
from physical activity and they are expected to continue with the
written and daily notebook assignments. If a student is excused
from P.E. with a doctor's note for 31 or more days, they are no
longer eligible for an "A" grade, but will be awarded a "Pass" or
"Fail" grade.
INDEPENDENT STUDY FOR LONG ABSENCES
If your child has to miss class for vacations, family occurrences,
medical reasons, etc., they are encouraged to talk to their PE teacher
to find out what they can do while they are gone to maintain their
class grade.
