Among these is the Open Educational Resources Initiative, which works to supply free or reasonably priced textbooks and other course materials. The funds will be used for such things as science-based field trips; garden supplies and grow sites; professional development and curriculum; robotics and other supplies. 5th Grade Boy Scout is Local Hero

South Lake Tahoe, CA (June 5, 2018) – At today’s City Council meeting, local 5th grade Boy Scout Gauge Patterson was recognized for his heroic efforts. Patterson received the “Citizen’s Life Saving Award” from Mayor Wendy David for using the skills he learned at the “Stop the Bleed” training given by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue on April 23rd.

A few days after receiving the training, Patterson was getting his hair cut and heard a person stating they had shortness of breath, chest pains and dizziness and he recognized these complaints as issues commonly associated with cardiac arrest from the training he had just completed. Patterson called 911 and reported the issues and emergency response personnel arrived on scene and where able to assist the person just as they were succumbing to cardiac arrest. (All involved are happy and healthy.)

“This is an incredible lifesaving story and proves that the system works,” said Fire Chief Jeff Meston.

THREE MENTAL HEALTH BILLS FOR CALIFORNIA CHILDREN

Mental disorders affect as many as 1 in 5 U.S. children each year and are some of the most costly conditions to treat – mental health problems among young people under age 24 cost the U.S. an estimated $247 billion annually. Unfortunately, the majority of young people who need mental health treatment do not receive it, and mental health problems in childhood often have negative effects in adulthood.

The California Legislature has proposed several bills that address children's mental health, from increased training and peer supports to early prevention and funding parity. Three current bills worth noting:

SB 906: Medi-Cal: mental health services: peer support specialist certification This bill establishes a statewide peer support specialist certification program for health providers. The peer support specialist would have the experience and the formal training to promote mind-body recovery for adults or transition-age youth.

SB 1019: Youth mental health and substance use disorder services This bill creates financial parity for children's mental health and adult mental health funding. It requires at least half of all funds allocated to the Mental Health Services Oversight & Accountability Commission under the Investment in Mental Health Wellness Act of 2013 be used to expand mental health services for minors.

AB 2686: Early identification of pupil mental health issues: in-service training for certificated employees and classified staff This bill requires each school district, county office of education, and charter school to provide in-service training to certificated employees and classified staff who provide instruction to or have regular personal contact with pupils in K-12th grades on the early identification of pupil mental health issues.

STRATEGIES FOR A SUCCESSFUL SUMMER BREAK

“With Memorial Day behind us, we look forward to a summer of relaxing, fun and family time. But while kids get a break from responsibilities, parents know that "school's out" means more planning, problem solving and flexible thinking. When you have kids who thrive on routine, making a plan early on for structuring free time and scheduling activities can help make everyone happier — and hopefully ensure that kids will do something besides play Fortnite for two months straight,” reports Child Mind Institute. Follow this link to find out more information for having a successful summer break.

Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation

Please take a moment to thank a LTEF Member when you see them in our community!

The diligent work of the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation (LTEF) has allowed our students to participate in an multitude of educational and enrichment programs that would have been otherwise unavailable to our schools. For nearly 30 years, the LTEF has operated as a volunteer-lead non-profit organization whose driving purpose is to "support the educational programs and needs of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District. " This is done through a fall and spring grant request process in which LTEF provides $40,000 to $60,000 each year to enrichment grants. Individual and business donations are the sole source for the LTEF fund. If you are interested in learning more or wish to donate, please visit the Foundation at http://www.ltedf.org/. Here photos from are some of the 24 programs that received a total of $69,552.40 in LTEF grants this year!
